A commemorative issue with an expressive design — a collector’s highlight and a fitting gift. The details of the obverse and reverse carry the story of "2 Euro Ireland 2026 — 50th Anniversary of U2": dedicated to 50 years since the formation of the legendary Dublin rock band U2, one of the most successful musical acts of all time. A fitting gift and a warm accent for any collection.

## Description

This commemorative coin conveys the idea of the issue through symbols, relief and an expressive composition that is a pleasure to examine. The subject and design details underscore the theme: dedicated to 50 years since the formation of the Irish rock band U2 (1976) — one of the best-known and most successful acts in the history of world rock music. This is a 2 euro circulating commemorative coin, legal tender throughout the eurozone. The design was created by Shaughn McGrath and the coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint. The issue’s original title in the issuer’s language is "U2".

#### Obverse

The obverse (the national, commemorative side of the coin) is dedicated to U2 and its 50th anniversary. The composition combines imagery associated with the band’s work, the name of the state ÉIRE, the year "2026" and the corresponding inscriptions; it was designed by Shaughn McGrath, who worked for years on the visual identity of the band’s albums. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union flag. Careful relief and balanced fields lend the piece collector-grade expressiveness.

#### Reverse

The reverse is common to all 2 euro commemorative coins: it shows the denomination "2 EURO" and a map of Europe against lines symbolizing the ties between the continent’s peoples. This side does not change from country to country, so it is the obverse that makes the coin recognizable. In the Proof version, the mirror field contrasts with the frosted relief, giving the image particular distinctiveness.

#### Historical context

U2 was formed in Dublin in 1976; its classic line-up — vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. — has remained unchanged for decades. World hits such as "With or Without You" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" made the band one of the most successful in the history of rock music. This is the first official 2 euro coin dedicated to a band that is still actively performing, and its release was doubly historic for Ireland: for the first time the country issued two national 2 euro commemorative coins in a single year (the first, marking its Presidency of the Council of the EU, appeared in July). Such issues become little "time capsules": they preserve a cultural marker and recognizable symbolism for future generations. A fitting gift and a warm accent for any collection. It fits a collection well and looks festive in a case.
