#### Historical context

World Youth Day (Jornada Mundial da Juventude) is a religious event of the Catholic Church, held once every 2-3 years, uniting millions of young Catholics from all over the world. Introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1985. The Lisbon World Youth Day 2023 took place from 1 to 6 August 2023 - this is the 16th international WYD since its inception. It was attended by about 1.5 million young Catholics from 151 countries - the largest event in the history of Portugal. Pope Francis visited Lisbon, held several events: a meeting with young people in Eduardo VII Park (August 3), the Stations of the Cross (August 4), the Great Vigil (August 5) and the Final Holy Mass on August 6 at the Grata Campus in the Parque de las Nações area - it was attended by about 1.5 million people. The slogan was "Maria levantão-se e partiu apressadamente" (Mary got up and left in haste - Luke 1:39). The preparations were led by Cardinal Manuel Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon.
