The National Bank of Ukraine began issuing commemorative coins in 1995 - four years after the restoration of independence. The first coin — "Oranta", gold, minted in 5,000 pieces — became the symbolic beginning of a new coin tradition in the country.

Over the next three decades, the NBU has become one of the most active and recognized issuers of collector coins in Central and Eastern Europe. Every year, from 40 to 80 new coins of various metals, denominations and themes are issued. Some series have won international recognition and awards at numismatic competitions.

• Silver (Ag 925 or 999) is the most popular material. Mintages of 3,000–15,000 pieces. Price from 2,000 to 20,000 UAH. The best combination of affordability and growth prospects.
• Nickel silver (white metal) — the most affordable NBU coins. Mintages 30,000–100,000 pieces. Price from 200 to 500 UAH. Ideal for beginners.
• Bimetal — coins made of two metals, often thematic. Mintages are medium.

Through bank branches

The NBU sells coins through a network of authorized bank dealers. Advantage: official documents, a new coin in original packaging with a certificate. Disadvantage: the choice is limited by the availability in a particular branch, new coins can run out quickly.

Through numismatic stores

Specialized stores usually have a wider selection, including coins from past years. The price may be higher than at the bank (especially for rare series), but the choice is much wider.

Through online platforms

OLX, Prom, specialized numismatic sites - there is a selection of coins of different years. Be sure to check the seller and demand high-quality photos.

What to look for when buying

• The presence of the original NBU packaging (capsule and cardboard box with a hologram).
• A certificate of quality with a signature and seal.
• The serial number of the coin corresponds to the number in the certificate.
• The condition of the coin - for new coins, UNC is the norm; any scratches or stains are a reason to be wary.
