Historical context

Sipsik is a blue-and-white striped rag doll, one of the most recognizable figures in Estonian children's literature. The character was created by writer Eno Raud and artist Edgar Walter. Sipsik first appeared on the pages of the children's magazine "Täheke", and in 1962 was published as a separate book, later - in the form of a film. According to the plot, Sipsik is a doll that schoolboy Mart sewed as a gift for his younger sister Anu. For the girl, the doll gradually becomes a true friend: in the world of children's imagination, Sipsik comes to life, talks and experiences various adventures, although for others it remains an ordinary rag doll. It is this combination of imagination, kindness and childish sincerity that made Sipsik a symbol of Estonian childhood. Over its 65-year history, the character has inspired a love of books in tens of thousands of children, and the coin continues the line of Estonian issues dedicated to the national literary heritage.
