Numismatic auction records: the most expensive coins in the world
Numismatic auctions set new price records every year. Coins sold for millions of dollars no longer surprise anyone in this environment. Here are some of the most famous examples.
"Flowing Hair" Dollar 1794 (USA)
The first dollar minted by the USA was sold at auction in 2013 for a record 10 million dollars. It is still one of the most expensive coins in all of numismatic history. The coin is in MS-66 (near perfect) condition, which explains its fantastic price.
Aureus Brutus "EID MAR" (42 BC)
The gold coin of Brutus with the image of daggers and the date of Caesar's assassination is one of the most dramatic numismatic objects. In 2020, it was sold at the Numismatica Ars Classica auction for 3.5 million pounds sterling. This is an absolute record for an ancient coin.
Pinos Island Doubloon (Spain, 1715)
A gold coin found on a sunken Spanish galleon - and therefore unique in its provenance. The combination of numismatic value and maritime adventure history made it particularly desirable. Sold for several million dollars.
Monaco "Two" 2007 (present)
On the scale of modern euro coins, it is also a record. A 2 euro coin from 2007 with Grace Kelly in Proof condition was sold for 3,000–5,000 euros on various sites. For a coin with a face value of 2 euros, this is a phenomenal price.
How numismatic auctions work
Numismatic auctions are significantly different from ordinary ones. Let's understand their mechanism.
Large international auction houses
- Heritage Auctions (USA) is the largest numismatic auction in the world in terms of turnover. It holds regular auctions with hundreds of lots. Has a public archive with all sales results.
- Stack's Bowers Galleries is one of the oldest and most respected auction houses in the USA. Specializes in American and world coins.
- Numismatica Ars Classica (Switzerland) is a leading marketplace for antique coins. The most expensive antiques were sold here.
- Roma Numismatics (Great Britain) specializes in antique and medieval coins.
Online marketplaces
- Catawiki is a popular European online auction with a large numismatic section. Available to buyers from Ukraine.
- eBay is the largest online marketplace, where there are also coins. Requires careful selection of the seller, but a large selection and competitive prices.
- Delcampe is popular among European collectors, with a large section of coins and postage stamps.
Bidding mechanism
At most auctions: a starting price is set (often significantly lower than the market price to attract participants). Participants place bids - in person, by phone or online. The coin goes to the person who made the highest bid. The auction "buyer's premium" is added to the price - usually 15-25% of the hammer price. Therefore, the real purchase price = hammer price + fee + shipping.
