Description
1 Euro Portugal 2025 is a bimetallic circulation coin of the Eurozone with a face value of one euro. The design of the national side has remained unchanged since 2002 and is based on the historical symbols of Portuguese statehood. The coin is minted by the Mint of Portugal INCM in accordance with the standards of the European Central Bank.
Obverse
The obverse features the royal seal of 1144, belonging to King Afonso I Henriques, the first monarch of Portugal. The seal is surrounded by seven castles and five heraldic shields, which repeat the elements of the national coat of arms. Between them is the name of the state "PORTUGAL", and below is the year of minting "2025". Along the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The mint mark of INCM and the initials of the designer Vitor Manuel Fernandes dos Santos are present.
Reverse
The reverse has a pan-European design of the second type, used after 2007. On the left is the denomination "1", on the right - a stylized map of Europe with an emphasis on the EU countries. The name of the currency "EURO" is superimposed on the central part of the composition. Six vertical lines with stars emphasize the unity and integration of the Eurozone countries. The design of the reverse was developed by Luc Luikks.
Historical background of the event on the coin
The royal seal of 1144 symbolizes the period of the formation of an independent Portugal and is associated with the reign of Afonso I, who proclaimed himself king after the Battle of Ourique. The castles and shields represent the protection of the territory and the formation of the kingdom. The inclusion of these symbols in the design of euro coins highlights the continuity of Portugal's national history in the context of modern European integration.
