Historical context
The national anthem of the Principality of Andorra - "El Gran Carlemany" ("Charlemagne the Great") - was written in 1914: its words were composed by Enric Marfany Bons, and the music by Joan Benlloch i Vivó, then Bishop of Urgell and Co-Prince of Andorra. The anthem was officially approved by the General Council of the Principality on 2 April 1917. The text of the anthem in Catalan refers to the legend of the founding of Andorra by Charlemagne in 805, when he supposedly granted the inhabitants of the valleys independence in exchange for their help in the war against the Moors. The anthem has been used officially since 8 September 1921 - this day is also the national holiday of Andorra.
