Historical context

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a historic document adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris by resolution 217 A (III). The Declaration consists of a preamble and 30 articles and, for the first time in history, proclaimed universal rights that belong to every person - civil, political, economic, social and cultural. Although the Declaration is not legally binding on states, it has inspired numerous constitutions (including the Andorran one of 1993, article 5 of which expressly recognizes its validity in Andorra), international treaties and founding documents of human rights organizations. The day of its adoption - 10 December - is celebrated around the world as International Human Rights Day.
