Description

Commemorative coin of the Principality of Andorra, issued on December 9, 2020 in a circulation of 60,000 copies in coincard packaging. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of universal women's suffrage in Andorra. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The lower left part of the coin depicts a female face with closed eyes, whose thick hair is formed by spiral lines created from a sequence of Catalan female names - a tribute to the solidarity of women in the fight for their rights. Among the names, only one is repeated - "VICTORIA", symbolizing the victory that was the acquisition of the right to vote. Above, in a semicircle, the inscription "50 ANYS DEL SUFRAGI UNIVERSAL FEMENÍ" (50 years of universal women's suffrage) is placed in Catalan. Below: "ANDORRA 1970–2020". On the outer ring: 12 stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left: the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right: a map of the continent. On the outer ring: 12 stars of the EU. On the band: a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.

Historical context

On April 14, 1970, the Principality of Andorra passed a law granting women the right to vote in parliamentary and local elections. This happened 22 years after the proclamation of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognized the equal rights of men and women. Andorra was one of the last countries in Europe to introduce women's suffrage. In 1973, women also received passive suffrage - the opportunity to be elected to parliament. The first female member of the General Council, Marta Capdevila, was elected in 1984. The introduction of universal suffrage was a key stage in the democratic transformations that culminated in the adoption of the Andorran Constitution of 1993.
