Commemorative coin of the Principality of Andorra, issued in 2021 in a circulation of 70,000 copies in coincard packaging. Dedicated to the theme of caring for the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Minted at the Pessac Mint.
Obverse
The theme of the coin "CUIDEM LA NOSTRA GENT GRAN" (Let's take care of the elderly) is symbolized by the image of a young person's hand holding the other hand with all the signs of aging, with a stethoscope underneath. The name of the issuing country "ANDORRA", which surrounds several reproductions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, represents the state's commitment to preventing its spread and caring for its citizens. The design also indicates the year of issue "2021". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left is the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map of the continent. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU. On the band is a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, began in late 2019 and quickly spread around the world. By the summer of 2021, when this coin was minted, the virus had caused over 4 million confirmed deaths worldwide. The elderly were the most vulnerable group - they were at the highest risk of severe illness and death. The Principality of Andorra, like other countries, has taken measures to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population - introduced quarantine restrictions, vaccination programs, support for care facilities. The coin is a tribute to both the elderly and the medical workers who fought the pandemic and cared for the health of citizens during the crisis.
