Commemorative coin of the Principality of Andorra, issued on September 7, 2022, in a circulation of 70,000 copies in coincard packaging. Dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Monetary Agreement between Andorra and the EU. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The puzzles of different shapes and sizes depicted in the lower part of the design symbolize the Principality of Andorra and the countries belonging to the European Union. In the upper part of the design, the stars surrounding the symbol of the common European currency "€" represent the fact that they are all part of the Euroworld. Next to them is the name of the issuing country "ANDORRA". The design also indicates the year of issue "2022" and an inscription indicating the event to which the coin is dedicated. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left is the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map of the continent. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU. On the band is a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
On 30 June 2011, the Principality of Andorra signed the Monetary Agreement with the European Union, which was deposited with the European Commission in Brussels on 23 February 2012 and entered into force on 1 April 2012. The monetary agreement recognized the euro as the official currency of the Principality and granted it the right to mint its own euro coins - 8 denominations (1 and 2 cents, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, 1 and 2 euros) with its own national designs. Andorra itself chooses the design themes and mintages, and the coins are minted by the Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris) or the Spanish FNMT. The first Andorran euro coins were put into circulation in 2015. Before that, Andorra unofficially used the euro (and before that, the Spanish peseta and the French franc), without having its own currency.
