Historical context
Charlemagne (742–814) - King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, crowned as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo III in Rome on 25 December 800. According to legend, Charlemagne founded Andorra in 805, when he supposedly granted the inhabitants of the Pyrenean valleys their own legal status in gratitude for their help in the war against the Moors. This legend is deeply rooted in Andorran history and culture - it is reflected in the national anthem "El Gran Carlemany" ("Charlemagne the Great"), which is depicted on a 2017 coin. 2022 also marked the 1275th anniversary of Charlemagne's birth. Albrecht Dürer's portrait is one of the most famous images of the emperor, although it was created 700 years after his death.
