Historical context
The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships (BTT - Bicicleta de Tot Terreny in Catalan) are the main annual mountain bike competition held under the auspices of the International Cyclist Union (UCI) since 1990. The 2024 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships were held in the Palais de Santa Ana and Vallée Nord (Pal-Arinsal) in Andorra from 28 August to 1 September 2024 and for the first time included all disciplines (cross-country, downhill, e-bike, marathon and others) in one event - the "Merged World Championships". Andorra has a long tradition of mountain biking - the Vallée Nord resort regularly hosts stages of the UCI World Cup, and the Principality's mountain trails are considered some of the best in Europe. Hosting the World Championships was an important step in establishing Andorra as a leading center for mountain biking.
