Above the seals is the inscription "50 JAHRE STAATSVERTRAG" ("50 years of the State Treaty"), below them is the year of issue "2005". The vertical stripes on the background symbolize the national colors of Austria - red-white-red. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union.

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the first type, designed by Luc Luix. On the left is the large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map of the European Union with the borders of the member states as of 1999. On the back of the map are six vertical lines with stars at the ends. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU. The edge of the coin features a fine groove with the inscription "2 EURO ***", repeated four times.

Historical context

The Austrian State Treaty was signed on May 15, 1955, in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna. The document restored Austria's independence as a sovereign democratic state within the borders of 1938 and ended the ten-year post-war occupation. The treaty was signed on behalf of Austria by Foreign Minister Leopold Figl. After the text of the treaty was published, Figl uttered the famous phrase "Österreich ist frei!" ("Austria is free!") from the balcony of the Belvedere. On October 26 of the same year, the parliament passed a law on permanent neutrality, which became the cornerstone of Austrian foreign policy.
