Historical context
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a historic document adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris by resolution 217 A (III). The Declaration consists of a preamble and 30 articles and for the first time in history proclaimed universal rights that belong to every person regardless of race, sex, religion or nationality. Although the Declaration is not legally binding on states, it has become the basis for numerous international treaties and constitutions. Belgium, as one of the founding countries of the UN and an active participant in international human rights activities, issued this coin in honor of the 60th anniversary of the document. The day of the adoption of the Declaration - December 10 - is celebrated around the world as International Human Rights Day.
