Historical context
The Belgian Development Cooperation is the official development assistance program of Belgium, established in 1985. The programme aims to combat poverty, support sustainable development, provide humanitarian assistance and capacity building in partner countries, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Mali, Senegal), as well as in Latin America and South-East Asia. Belgium is one of the leading donors to the European Union in terms of percentage of GDP allocated to official development assistance. The lead agency is Enabel (formerly Belgian Technical Cooperation - BTC), which implements projects in the fields of health, education, agriculture and infrastructure.
