Commemorative coin of the Kingdom of Belgium, issued on March 23, 2016. Dedicated to the participation of the Belgian Olympic team in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The central part of the obverse depicts five interconnected Olympic rings - the symbol of the Olympic Games, and above them - a stylized figure of an athlete with his arms raised in a victory gesture. Below this image is the inscription "TEAM BELGIUM" in a semicircle. On the left vertically - the year of issue "2016". On the right in three lines - the mint mark (the head of the archangel Michael in a helmet with a cross), the country code "BE" and the mark of the mint director Bernard Gillard (a cat). On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left is the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is the map. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU. On the band is a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
The XXXI Summer Olympics were held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - it was the first Summer Olympics held in South America. Belgium participated with a delegation of 108 athletes in 16 sports. Belgium won 6 medals: 2 gold (Nina Derouen in ski jumping, Greg van Avermaet in cycling), 2 silver and 2 bronze. The performance of the Belgian women's players in beach volleyball and field hockey was particularly successful (the Red Lions men's team won silver). The Rio Games were one of Belgium's best performances at the Summer Olympics in decades.
