Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a portrait of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and details from his most famous paintings - possibly a fragment of "Hunters in the Snow" (1565) or "Peasant Wedding" (1567). Around it are the inscriptions "450 jaar Pieter Bruegel de Oude" in Dutch and "450 ans Pieter Bruegel l'Ancien" in French (450 years of Pieter Bruegel the Elder). The country code "BE" and the year of issue "2019" are also placed. The mint and director's marks are present. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left - the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - the map. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the EU. On the band - a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525/30 - September 9, 1569) was a prominent Flemish artist of the Northern Renaissance, one of the most influential painters of the 16th century. Born in the Brabant region, he studied in Antwerp under Pieter Cook van Aalst. He is known for his works depicting peasant life, folklore, landscapes and biblical subjects in a contemporary context. The most famous paintings: "Hunters in the Snow" (1565), "Peasant Wedding" (1567), "Triumph of Death" (1562), "Tower of Babel" (1563), "Dutch Proverbs" (1559). He died on September 9, 1569 in Brussels. His two sons - Pieter Bruegel the Younger and Jan Bruegel the Elder - also became famous artists. The coin commemorated the 450th anniversary of the death of the master, whose works are kept in leading museums in the world.
