Commemorative coin of the Kingdom of Belgium, 2 euros, issued in 2020 in a circulation of 600,000 copies. Dedicated to the International Year of Plant Health. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint in Utrecht on behalf of the Royal Mint of Belgium.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts the official logo of the International Year of Plant Health 2020 (IYPH 2020). The leaves, arranged in the shape of a globe, symbolize healthy plants as a source of the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, and all life on the planet. Above is the inscription "Internationaal jaar plantgezondheid" (International Year of Plant Health) in Dutch and "Année internationale de la santé végétale" in French. On the left is the mark of the director of the Royal Mint, Ingrid van Herzele, on the right is the mark of the Netherlands Mint in Utrecht (caduceus). At the bottom is the country code "BE" and the year "2020". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left is the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is the map. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU. The rim features a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★" repeated six times.
Historical context
The International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) 2020 was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 2018 at the proposal of Zambia and Finland, supported by the European Union. The organization responsible for implementing the program is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The aim of the initiative is to raise global awareness of the importance of protecting plants from pests and diseases for food security, trade, economic development and the conservation of biodiversity. According to FAO, plant pests destroy up to 40% of the world's harvest annually. Belgium has emphasized its support for the initiative and the importance of environmental issues through this coin.
