Historical context
The Belgian-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU - Union Économique Belgique-Luxembourg / Belgisch-Luxemburgse Economische Unie) is an economic union signed on 25 July 1921 between the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, one of the oldest economic treaties in Europe. The treaty was initially concluded for 50 years and created a customs union and a currency parity between the Belgian franc and the Luxembourg franc. The BLEU became the basis for further integration: in 1944 the Netherlands joined it, creating the Benelux, and later all three countries became founders of the European Communities. A joint coin of Belgium and Luxembourg commemorated this historic event.
