Historical context
Charles V Habsburg (1500–1558) was one of the most powerful monarchs in European history: Holy Roman Emperor (1519–1556), King of Spain as Charles I (1516–1556), ruler of the Habsburg Netherlands (which included modern Belgium) and vast territories in Europe and America. In 1521, he ordered the issuance of a new series of coins to standardize monetary circulation in the Habsburg Netherlands, known as the "Carolus gulden". These gold and silver coins became the standard for European trade and were used for several decades. Charles V was born in Ghent (modern Belgium), making these coins part of Belgian heritage.
