On the band - a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.

Historical context

On March 27, 1948, a law was passed in Belgium that gave women the right to vote in national elections on an equal basis with men. Before that, women had limited suffrage: in 1920, a law was passed that allowed widows of soldiers and mothers of those killed in the First World War to vote in local elections. Universal local suffrage for women was introduced in 1921, but it was not extended to national elections until 27 years later. Women voted for the first time in national elections on 26 June 1949. This struggle was preceded by decades of activism by women's movements - Marie Popelin, Isaly Van Diest and other pioneers, who were already commemorated on the 2011 Belgian coin.
