Commemorative coin of the Kingdom of Belgium, issued in 2024. Dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts elements symbolizing nature and biodiversity: stylized images of flora and fauna, possibly a globe with its wealth of life. Around it is the inscription "75 jaar IUCN / 75 ans UICN" (75 years of IUCN) in Dutch and French. Also - the country code "BE", the year "2024", the mintmarks and the director. On the outer ring - the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. Map of Europe without internal borders, on the left - the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - the map. On the outer ring - the 12 stars of the EU. On the band - a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an international organization founded on 5 October 1948 in Fontainebleau, France. It is the world's largest network of conservation organizations: it has over 1,400 member organizations (governments, non-governmental organizations) in 170 countries and over 15,000 volunteer experts in six commissions. The head office is in Gland, Switzerland. The IUCN's best-known output is the IUCN Red List, published since 1964, which assesses the conservation status of over 150,000 species of plants and animals. IUCN has official observer status at the UN and is actively involved in the formulation of international environmental agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity. Belgium has been an active member of IUCN since its founding.
