Obverse
The center of the coin depicts the official logo of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2024 - a stylized graphic symbolizing the importance of the period for Belgium and the European Union. Around it are the inscriptions "Belgisch voorzitterschap" in Dutch and "Présidence belge" in French (Belgian Presidency). Also - the country code "BE", the year of issue "2024", the mintmarks and the mint director's marks. On the outer ring - the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix. A map of Europe without internal borders, on the left - the denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - the map. On the outer ring - the 12 stars of the EU. On the band - a groove with the inscription "2 ★ ★", repeated six times.
Historical context
Belgium held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2024 - this was the 13th Belgian Presidency since the creation of the European Communities. The Presidency took place as part of a trio with Spain (second half of 2023) and Hungary (second half of 2024). The main priorities of the Belgian presidency included: strengthening the rule of law, protecting democracy, EU enlargement (negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, Western Balkan countries), climate policy, economic recovery after the pandemic, and the EU's industrial strategy. Brussels, as the de facto capital of the EU, plays a permanent key role in the work of the European institutions.
