Historical context
The National Lottery of Belgium (Loterie Nationale / Nationale Loterij) is a state lottery, established on July 22, 1934 by a special law. Initially, its purpose was to finance colonial efforts in the Belgian Congo and aid victims of World War I. Over time, it became the leader of all state lottery games in Belgium: Lotto, EuroMillions, scratch cards, sports betting, etc. A significant part of the National Lottery's profits (about 185 million euros annually) goes to finance socially beneficial projects: culture, sports, scientific research, humanitarian aid, development and the fight against poverty. As of 2025, the lottery continues to be one of the most important institutions in Belgium, combining an entertainment function with a social mission.
