With the introduction of the euro in 2026, Bulgaria officially became the 21st member of the eurozone and has since introduced its own distinctive euro coins. The design deliberately draws on the traditions of the former lev currency: with Cyrillic script, national symbols and a strong cultural identity. Thus, Bulgaria is one of the few euro countries whose national side of the coin is entirely in a non-Latin script. The 2 euro commemorative coin is fully decorated with 24 carat gold plating.
