Reverse
The reverse features the lion from the Finnish coat of arms - a traditional symbol of Finnish statehood - combined with the inscription "SUOMI FINLAND 90", marking the 90th anniversary of independence. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the EU and the year "2007".
Historical context
Finland declared independence on 6 December 1917 after Russia was plunged into revolutionary chaos. The country's parliament adopted a declaration of independence, which was soon recognized by Soviet Russia, Sweden, France and other states. After a brief civil war in 1918, Finland established itself as a sovereign republic.
