Historical context
The Borghese Diet of 1809 was convened by Tsar Alexander I after the conquest of Finland in the Swedish-Russian War. At the Diet, Finland received extensive autonomy, its own government and Diet, the right to maintain the Lutheran religion and Swedish laws. This laid the institutional foundation that allowed for the declaration of independence in 1917.
