A common commemorative 2 euro coin minted by all eurozone countries in 2012 to mark the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the euro cash. On 1 January 2002, the single currency first entered citizens' wallets.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coins features a map of the EU, 12 stars of the European Union, the mint mark and the year 2012. The Finnish version is identical to the issues of other eurozone countries in terms of the design of the reverse.
Reverse
The reverse depicts the euro sign in the form of a large coin against the background of a children's drawing of Europe - a symbol of continuity and trust in the single currency. The inscription "2002–2012" and the 12 EU stars complete the composition. The design was selected through a pan-European competition.
Historical context
On 1 January 2002, euro banknotes and coins were put into circulation in 12 EU countries. Within two months, the new currency had completely replaced national money. The transition affected over 300 million citizens. The euro became the world's second-largest reserve currency and a symbol of deeper European integration.
