The 2 euro coin was minted by Finland in 2015 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Johannes Sibelius (1865–1957), the most famous Finnish composer, whose legacy is an integral part of world classical music.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coin features a map of the EU, the 12 stars of the European Union, the Vantaa mint mark, and the year 2015.
Reverse
The reverse features a portrait of Johannes Sibelius in profile, surrounded by stylized musical notes, a reference to his musical heritage. The inscription "JEAN SIBELIUS", "SUOMI FINLAND 2015" and the 12 EU stars complete the image.
Historical context
Jan Sibelius was born on December 8, 1865 in Hämeenlinna. His symphonic poem "Finland" (1899) became an anthem of the struggle for independence. Sibelius wrote 7 symphonies, a violin concerto and numerous chamber works. He lived to be 91 years old and remained a living legend until the end. His portrait is depicted on the 100 Finnish markka banknote.
