The 2 euro coin was minted by Finland in 2016 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the death of Eino Leino (1878–1926), an outstanding Finnish poet, prose writer and translator, one of the most prominent representatives of Finnish literature.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coin: a map of the EU, 12 stars of the European Union, the Vantaa mint mark and the year 2016.
Reverse
The reverse depicts a portrait of Eino Leino, a characteristic image of the poet familiar to Finns from literary publications. The inscription "EINO LEINO", "SUOMI FINLAND 2016" and the 12 EU stars frame the coin.
Historical context
Eino Leino was born on 6 July 1878. Inspired by the Kalevala and European symbolism, he wrote over 80 books, including the collections "Whitsongs" and "Helkavirsiä". Leino also translated the works of Dante and Moliere into Finnish. He died at the age of 48, leaving behind an extraordinarily rich legacy. Every year on 6 July, "Leino Day" is celebrated in Finland.
