The 2 euro coin was minted by Finland in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence on 6 December 1917. It is one of the most significant commemorative coins in the history of Finnish numismatics.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coin: a map of the EU, the 12 stars of the European Union, the Vantaa mint mark and the year 2017.
Reverse
The reverse depicts a characteristic Finnish landscape - silhouettes of pine trees at sunset, symbolizing a free and independent Finland. The inscriptions "SUOMI 100", "SUOMI FINLAND 2017" and the 12 stars of the EU complete the design. The composition was specially developed for the centenary.
Historical context
On December 6, 1917, the Finnish Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence. Soon after, Soviet Russia, France, Sweden, and other states recognized independence. After a short but brutal civil war in 1918, the country adopted a republican system. Today, December 6 is Finland's main public holiday.
