Historical context
Sauna has been a central element of Finnish culture for thousands of years. There are about 3 million saunas in Finland for a population of 5.5 million. They are a place of relaxation, purification and socialization - people come here with friends, family, and once even business negotiations were held in the sauna. UNESCO included Finnish sauna culture on its list of intangible heritage in 2020.
