The 2 euro coin was minted by Finland in 2022 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Finnish National Ballet (Suomen Kansallisbaletti). Founded in 1922, the company is one of the leading ballet companies in Scandinavia.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coin: the EU map, the 12 stars of the European Union, the Vantaa mint mark and the year 2022.
Reverse
The reverse depicts a stylized figure of a ballerina in an arabesque, a classic image of ballet. The inscriptions "KANSALLISBALETTI 100", "SUOMI FINLAND 2022" and the 12 stars of the EU complete the design. The light and elegant composition conveys the spirit of dance art.
Historical context
The Finnish National Ballet was founded in 1922 as a ballet division of the Finnish National Opera. Today, the company has over 75 dancers and performs classical and contemporary repertoire. The theater is known for its productions of Tchaikovsky, as well as works by contemporary choreographers. The company tours all over the world and is an important part of Finnish cultural life.
