The 2 euro coin was minted by Finland in 2024 and is dedicated to the outstanding architectural office Gesellius–Lindgren–Saarinen, which operated in 1896–1905 and formed the Finnish national romantic architectural style.
Obverse
The standard obverse of the 2 euro coins: a map of the EU, 12 stars of the European Union, the Vantaa mint mark and the year 2024.
Reverse
The reverse depicts a characteristic architectural element in the style of Finnish romanticism - an arched tower or the facade of a building made of granite masonry. The inscription "GESELLIUS LINDGREN SAARINEN", "SUOMI FINLAND 2024" and the 12 stars of the EU complete the design.
Historical context
The Gesellius–Lindgren–Saarinen office was founded in 1896 by three young architects. Their masterpieces - Helsinki Central Station (Saarinen), the National Museum of Finland and the Hvitträsk Manor - became symbols of new Finnish architecture. Eliel Saarinen later emigrated to the United States, where he continued his brilliant career.
