A joint 2-euro coin issued by France in 2007 together with all the countries of the eurozone to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, signed on 25 March 1957, the document that established the European Economic Community.
Obverse
The French obverse of the 2-euro coins depicts "Marianne" - an allegorical personification of the French Republic, with the inscription "RF" and the mint mark of the Paris Mint (a horn and a hexagon). The year of minting is 2007.
Reverse
The joint reverse depicts a treaty book held by two human figures against a stylized continent. The inscriptions "TRATADO DE ROMA" / "TRAITÉ DE ROME" and "1957–2007" mark the anniversary. The ring bears the 12 stars of the EU.
Historical context
The Treaties of Rome were signed on 25 March 1957 by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. They established the European Economic Community and Euratom. These agreements became the foundation of the common market, and later the basis for the EU, the single currency and all subsequent steps of integration.
