A joint 2-euro commemorative coin minted by France together with all eurozone countries in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of EMU and the euro. The French version differs only in the obverse with Marianne.
Obverse
The French obverse features Marianne, the inscription "RF" (Republic of France) and the Paris Mint mark. The year of minting is 2009.
Reverse
The joint reverse depicts the euro sign and a human figure against a symbolic image of the Earth. The inscriptions "1999–2009" and "EMU" mark the decades of the monetary union. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Historical context
On 1 January 1999, the euro was introduced as the non-cash currency of 11 EU countries, including France. This was the result of the 1992 Maastricht Treaty and the long-term coordination of economic policies. The transition marked the deepest step in monetary integration in Europe, transferring monetary policy to the European Central Bank.
