A common 2-euro coin minted by France together with all eurozone countries in 2012 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the euro cash. In France, the euro replaced the franc on 1 January 2002.
Obverse
The French obverse features the image of Marianne, the inscription "RF" and the Paris Mint mark. The year of minting is 2012.
Reverse
The common reverse depicts the euro sign in the form of a large coin against a stylised image of Europe. The inscription "2002–2012" and the 12 EU stars on the outer ring complete the design.
Historical context
On 1 January 2002, the euro was introduced into circulation in 12 EU countries. In France, the transition from the franc to the euro was an orderly one: within two months, the new currency had completely replaced the old one. This marked the largest monetary transition in modern history, affecting over 300 million citizens.
