The 2 euro coin was minted by France in 2014 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day — June 6, 1944, when Allied troops landed on the shores of Normandy, opening the Second Front and marking the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe.
Obverse
The French obverse features the image of Marianne, the inscription "RF" and the mark of the Paris Mint. The year of minting is 2014.
Reverse
The reverse features the silhouette of a landing craft against the backdrop of the Normandy coast with the inscriptions "6 JUIN 1944" and "70ème ANNIVERSAIRE DU DÉBARQUEMENT". The outer ring features 12 EU stars. The design commemorates the memory of the dead and the courage of the Allies.
Historical context
On June 6, 1944, the largest amphibious operation in history took place: more than 156,000 soldiers from the United States, Great Britain, Canada and other countries landed on five beaches in Normandy. Operation Overlord marked the opening of the Second Front. France was liberated by the end of August 1944, and Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.
