The 2 euro coin was minted by France in 2015 to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Federation Festival, held on July 14, 1790 on the Champ de Mars in Paris — the first mass celebration of the anniversary of the Revolution and a symbol of the unity of the French nation.
Obverse
The French obverse features the image of Marianne, the inscription "RF" and the mark of the Paris Mint. The year of minting is 2015.
Reverse
The reverse depicts a stylized scene of the Federation Festival: figures with a tricolor flag and the inscription "FÊTE DE LA FÉDÉRATION 1790–2015". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Historical context
The Federation Day took place on July 14, 1790, exactly one year after the storming of the Bastille. About 400,000 people gathered on the Champ de Mars, including delegates from all departments. King Louis XVI swore an oath to the Constitution. The event symbolized the unity of the nation and reconciliation between the estates. It is from this that the tradition of the French national holiday of July 14 originates.
