The 2 euro coin was minted by France in 2016 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of François Mitterrand (1916–1996), the longest-serving President of France from 1981 to 1995 and one of the architects of the Maastricht Treaty.
Obverse
The French obverse features the image of Marianne, the inscription "RF" and the Paris Mint mark. The year of minting is 2016.
Reverse
The reverse features a portrait of François Mitterrand with the inscriptions "FRANCOIS MITTERRAND", "1916–1996" and "2016". The 12 EU stars surround the ring. The stern profile portrait reflects the character of the statesman.
Historical context
François Mitterrand was born on October 26, 1916. He was elected President of France twice (1981–1995) and remains the longest-serving president of the Fifth Republic. During his reign, France implemented social reforms, abolished the death penalty, and signed the Maastricht Treaty, which laid the foundations of the EU and the euro. He died in 1996.
