The 2 euro coin was minted by France in 2017 to commemorate Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), the most prominent French sculptor, whose works The Thinker, The Kiss, and The Gates of Hell have entered the treasury of world art. The coin is issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the master's death.
Obverse
The French obverse features an image of Marianne, the inscription "RF" and the mark of the Paris Mint. The year of minting is 2017.

The reverse depicts a fragment of The Thinker, Rodin's iconic sculpture. The inscription "AUGUSTE RODIN", "1917–2017" and the 12 EU stars around the outer ring complete the coin.
Historical context
Auguste Rodin was born on 12 November 1840 in Paris. His "The Thinker" (1880) is the most reproduced sculpture in the world. Rodin revolutionised sculpture, abandoning classical canons in favour of living movement and psychological depth. He died on 17 November 1917. The Musée Rodin in Paris houses thousands of his works.
