The 2 euro coin was minted by France in 2019 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the character Asterix, first published on 29 October 1959 in the magazine Pilote. Asterix is one of the most famous French comic book characters worldwide.

Historical context
Asterix, a small but brave Gallic warrior, was born from the pen of screenwriter René Gossiny and artist Albert Uderzo in 1959. The series includes 40 albums, translated into over 111 languages with a circulation of over 380 million copies. The adventures of Asterix and his friend Obelix ridicule the pretensions of great powers to small but resilient people.
