Historical context

Laskarina Bouboulina (Λασκαρίνα Μπουμπουλίνα, 1771-1825) is a national heroine of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the first female admiral in history. She was born on May 11, 1771 in Constantinople to a rebel from Hydra. She was married twice - to sailors Dimitrios Yannis and Dimitrios Bouboulis, both of whom died. She inherited a considerable estate and a fleet of several ships, including her legendary flagship "Agamemnon" - the largest Greek privateer of the time. In 1816, she received from the Russian Tsar Alexander I the title of Admiral of the Russian Fleet - a unique case for a woman. From the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821, Bouboulina financed the uprising with her own property, participated in the sieges of the fortresses of Monemvasia (April 1821), Pylos (May-August 1821), Naples (December 1822). She commanded her ships in combat. After the capture of Tripolitania, she rescued the Turkish women of the Sultan's court. She died on May 22, 1825 in Spetses during a family quarrel, shot from a window. A symbol of female heroism and patriotism.
