The 2 euro coin was minted by Croatia in 2023 to mark the country's transition to the single European currency, the euro, which replaced the Croatian kuna on January 1, 2023. Croatia became the 20th country in the eurozone.
Obverse
The Croatian obverse of the 2 euro coin depicts a map of Croatia with characteristic chess symbols and the inscription "HRVATSKA". Along the outer ring are 12 EU stars. Year of minting - 2023.
Reverse
The standard reverse of the 2 euro coin depicts a map of the European Union against a background of transverse lines. Along the outer ring are twelve golden EU stars. The inscription "2 EURO" on the outer ring completes the design.
Historical context
Croatia joined the EU on 1 July 2013 and, after fulfilling the Maastricht criteria, switched to the euro on 1 January 2023, replacing the kuna, which had existed since 1994. The transition took place without problems: for two weeks, both currencies were in circulation in parallel, after which the euro became the sole legal tender.
