The 2 euro coin was minted by Croatia in 2024 to commemorate Marko Marulić (1450–1524), a prominent Croatian poet, humanist writer and "father of Croatian literature", whose work formed the basis of the Croatian written tradition.
Obverse
The Croatian obverse features a portrait of Marko Marulić and the inscriptions "MARKO MARULIĆ" and "HRVATSKA". The outer ring features 12 EU stars. The year of minting is 2024.
Obverse
The standard reverse of the 2 euro coin depicts a map of the European Union against a background of transverse lines, surrounded by 12 EU stars. The inscription "2 EURO" on the outer ring completes the design.
Historical context
Marko Marulić was born on 18 August 1450 in Split. His poem "Judith" (1501, published 1521) is the first major literary work in the Croatian language. Marulić also wrote in Latin and was widely known in Europe. His work "De institutione" has been translated into 14 languages. He died in 1524 in Split.
