The 2 euro commemorative coin of Spain, issued on March 1, 2012 in a circulation of 8,000,000 copies, is the third in the series "Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO". Dedicated to the Burgos Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Santa María). It was minted at the Madrid Mint. Overse

The national side depicts the facade of the Burgos Cathedral in all its grandeur - with characteristic openwork Gothic spires rising above the main portal. On the left, in an arc, is the inscription "ESPAÑA" (Spain), on the right - the year of issue "2012" and the mark of the Madrid Mint (the letter "M" crowned with a crown). The outer ring of the coin features 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders, a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are 12 stars of the European Union. The band is with thin ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

Burgos Cathedral is a Catholic church in the city of Burgos (Castile and León, Spain), dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Construction began on July 20, 1221, at the initiative of King Fernando III the Saint and Bishop Mauricio, following French Gothic models. The first chapel was consecrated in 1230. The cathedral was built in three stages: the 13th century - the main Gothic structure; the 15th-16th centuries - late Gothic and Renaissance additions (the famous openwork spires of the main facade, the Chapel of the Connetable, the dome over the transept); the 18th century - the last significant works (sacristy, Chapel of Santa Teca). The cathedral is one of the most outstanding monuments of Spanish Gothic and the burial place of the national hero El Cid. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List on October 31, 1984 - the only Spanish cathedral protected by this status independently.
