Overse

The national side depicts a double superimposed profile: in the foreground - a portrait of the new King Philip VI (facing right), in the background, behind him - a portrait of his father, King Juan Carlos I. Both profiles are turned in one direction. On the left, in an arc, are the inscription "ESPAÑA" and the year "2014". On the right is the Madrid mint mark in the form of a crowned letter "M". On the outer ring of the coin are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.

Historical context

On 2 June 2014, King Juan Carlos I (born 1938, on the throne since 1975) announced his abdication in favour of his son Felipe VI. The Spanish Parliament passed Organic Law 3/2014 on the act of abdication. On 18 June 2014, the abdication came into effect, and on 19 June Felipe VI took the oath of office on the 1978 Constitution in the Palace of the Congress of Deputies and was proclaimed King of Spain. This was the first transfer of the crown by voluntary abdication in the modern Spanish monarchy. Philip VI (Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Bourbon y Grecia, born 30 January 1968) is the first King of Spain born in Madrid, known for his education and his role in the democratic transition. The coin depicts the chronological succession of the generations of the Bourbon dynasty.
