2 euro commemorative coin of Spain, issued on February 1, 2018, with a circulation of 400,000 copies. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the birth of King Philip VI. Legal basis - Resolution EIC/863/2017 of September 5, 2017. Minted at the Madrid Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Overse

On the national side, in the center, the personal coat of arms of His Majesty King Philip VI is depicted - a four-part shield with the coats of arms of Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre, with a small coat of arms of Granada (pomegranate) below, crowned with a royal crown and framed by the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On the left, in an arc, is the inscription "ESPAÑA". In the lower left corner is the year "2018". From the coat of arms to the right in an arc is the inscription "50 ANIVERSARIO DE S.M. FELIPE VI" (50th anniversary of His Majesty Felipe VI). At the top right is the Madrid mint mark. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★" repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.

Historical context

Philip VI (Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Bourbon y Grecia) was born on 30 January 1968 at the Nuestra Señora de Loreto Clinic in Madrid - the first king of Spain to be born in Madrid. He is the son of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Greece. He was educated at the Santiago Apóstol School, at Lakefield College in Canada (1984-1985), underwent military training in all three branches of the armed forces, and received a bachelor's degree in law from the Autonomous University of Madrid (1993) and a master's degree in international relations from Georgetown University in the United States (1995). On 22 May 2004, he married Letizia Ortiz Rocasolana. After his father's abdication on June 18-19, 2014, he was proclaimed King of Spain. He is the father of two daughters, Leonora (heir apparent) and Sofia. His 50th birthday was an important milestone in his life, marked by the issuance of this commemorative coin.
