Historical context

Toledo is a historic city in central Spain, the capital of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, located on a rocky hill surrounded by the Tagus River. From 542, it was the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, and until 1085 it was under Muslim rule. In the Middle Ages, three great cultures coexisted peacefully here - Christian, Muslim and Jewish, which gave the city the nickname "City of Three Cultures" (Ciudad de las Tres Culturas). In 1085, Alfonso VI of Castile reconquered Toledo, and the city became the center of a translation school that transmitted the Arabic scientific heritage to Europe. In 1561, Philip II moved the capital to Madrid, but Toledo remained a cultural and religious center (the residence of the Archbishop-Primate of Spain). El Greco lived here (1577-1614). The Gate of the Sun is one of the main fortress gates of the city, the Synagogue del Transito was built in 1357 for Samuel Levi, treasurer of King Pedro I. Toledo was included in the UNESCO list on November 26, 1986.
